History of paper and cardboard

The history of paper and cardboard goes back to China. The Chinese were the first people who made papers like today’s papers more than 2 thousand years ago. Muslim Iranians learned the way of making paper from the Chinese in the first century after Islam and improved it. The city of Samarkand was the biggest center of making and buying and selling paper for many years.Then, paper factories were established in other cities, including Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo, Morocco, the island of Sicily and Muslim cities in Spain. Archaeological findings show that there was paper in China from the first century AD. In 105 AD , one of the courtiers described a new material to the emperor that was made from old cloth, tree bark, hemp and grass and they wrote on it. Over time, the way of making paper improved and they made it with plant fibers like bamboo. The Arabs took this product to Europe and in 1150 AD, Westerners built the first paper mill in Spain. The Chinese invented the mass production machine. The first banknote was prepared and exchanged in China in 1024 AD.

Kaghd or paper is a Persian word and the mention of this word or “sheet” is seen very often in old Arabic books.
